Finding The Right Samsung Focus Accessories

Monday, November 8th, 2010

The Samsung Focus is arguably the most exciting of the new Windows Phone 7 devices on the market, and that’s including the notion that there’s plenty of other Windows Phone 7 devices out there already. One of the reasons that the Focus has garnered so much attention is that it really does stands as it’s own, while some of the other models largely look the same. The only other device that comes close is its European cousin, the Omnia 7. Both devices boast a 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU, 8 GB internal storage, a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and a 5-megapixel camera. As soon as you hold it in your hand, you’ll know why this new device is so beloved.

It doesn’t hurt the popularity of this new device that there are already a slew of fantastic accessories on the market. One of the top sellers is the Focus-specific Bluetooth headset by Samsung. Samsung has designed it for maximum comfort, and they’ve given it the ability to work up to 33 feet. Their proprietary digital signal process along with dual-microphone echo-cancellation technology guarantees the smoothest Bluetooth headset experience ever. But if you’re in need of some kind of wired connection, Samsung makes the Hyper Silver Stereo with Microphone for the Focus. The ear bud-style provides comfort during long use, and its microphone allows for conversations, as well providing crystal clear clarity.

Other popular items include the various Samsung desktop holders and docking stations. Samsung has a Focus-specific desktop docking station that servers as a stand and a charger, and it even has built-in speakers that expand the Focus experience. It’s the perfect choice for the office. For the car, we prefer a device like the windshield car mount. This unit gives you a great deal of flexibility as far as mounting it, but once it’s in place, it’s extremely sturdy. There’s little chance that you or even a rowdy child will dislodge it by accident.

There’s also a wide range of cases on the market: silicone cases, pouches, leather cases, aluminum cases and hard plastic cases. The best case for the Focus depends a great deal on how you use the device. Silicone offers style at a great price, and the cases defend well against scratches. However, if you were looking to protect the device from drops, a hard case would be best. Pouch cases tend to provide the best of both worlds. The downside is that you have to remove the device each time to use it. Leather cases cost more but provide a sophisticated look.

There are also different kinds of chargers. Even though the Focus comes with its own capable charger, it tends not to meet the needs of users on the go. For those people, there are two chargers we consider must-haves. The first is the Samsung Focus car charger, which will require a car lighter to USB adapter if you don’t have a USB port in the car. The other is the Cellet Travel charge, which turns any outlet into a USB port that you can use for charging.

New Model Same Phone: The Curve 9300

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

One of the best mobiles released by Blackberry recently has been the Blackberry Curve 9300. The new and improved features of this update from the 8500 series is sure to cause a stir. Not only does the curve seem to be visually stunning on the eye, but at the same time, it also is one of the best smartphones to have been released.

Many of RIM’s previous models have been heavy and unwieldy, but this phone is a vast improvement that competes with or surpasses the majority of other phones available. After some time in the lab and a complete hardware restructure, not only is the Blackberry Curve 9300 the smoothest running smartphone -it’s also the smoothest phone to use, now also complete with media and volume control. While many of the 9300’s greatest features have yet to be revealed, future users can expect a screen just under two and a half inches that delivers a resolution of 320×240.

With these dimensions, the Blackberry Curve 9300 makes for a bigger device than its ancestor, the 8900. Some of the 9300’s capabilities have yet to be revealed, and it remains to be seen whether this new mobile will rival the Bold processor. It will, however, be able to cruise comfortably at 624MHz. As the 9300 can be purchased in two color choices, black and silver, it is now possible to select the device that matches your style.

The complete QWERTY keyboard on the 9300 is more touch-friendly than on older models, and an optical track pad is also available that many users will choose to utilize. You will also be able to skip tracks forward and backward, plus start, stop, and pause with the flush control system that is also on the Curve. And with the Blackberry Curve 9300’s sharp new look, this phone dares you to rock out.

When the new OS6 is released, the Blackberry Curve 9300 will be able to access the available updates; when the Curve is first released, however, it will come with the current OS5.

Top Cases And Accessories For The BlackBerry Torch

Monday, September 6th, 2010

The BlackBerry Torch is finally here, and first impressions are overwhelmingly positive. Nevertheless, we’re gadgeteers, and our satisfaction doesn’t last long. Now that the Torch is finally in our hands, it’s immediately time to start thinking about all those accessories. So which one will be the perfect choice for the new Torch? Let’s find out.

Our first order of business is cases. Are you amazed at how many are on the market? There were dozens of them on the market before the phone was even available. Talk about overkill. We’ve had our hands full testing all of those options, and while we’re not done yet, we do have a couple of current favorites. The first is the Krusell Multidapt horizontal leather pouch and the other is the Koskin leather holster. Both of these models have belt clips but we prefer the Koskin when you want to wear it on your belt. It sits perfectly all while providing complete protection and being stylish and durable. Krusell’s pouch is horizontal, and if we’ve found it to be a little awkward for belt wear. However, it is our case of choice for those who carry their phone around in a purse or briefcase.

Many BlackBerry Torch owners prefer the slip-on style covers to the heavier, thicker cases. While hard, rubber, and to a lesser extent leather, cases provide more overall protection, we prefer the slip-ons as well when we’re working at home or around the office. Our current favorite is the ZAGG Invisible Shield, which we have found to be the best combination of slim and protection. I’m sure many of you will be surprised to how hard the cover is, because it sure did surprise us A phone with the Invisible Shield survived drops that shattered unprotected units. The one downside to this type cover is that it doesn’t protect dings and nicks around the edges as well as full cases do.

Perhaps the most vital accessory for any Torch owner is the charger, and while there is an impressive array of chargers and desktop chargers on the market, we opted for the OEM edition in both cases, which surprised us. For desktop use, BlackBerry makes a super-convenient pod that they price at less than $30, and which lets you actually use the device while it is mounted. For travel purposes, we prefer the BlackBerry OEM micro-USB charger, which is small, lightweight, and simply gets the job done for less than $15.

Although these are our top picks, these aren’t the only accessories we liked. We simply lacked the space to include them all. One example is the Gadget Guard body film kit, which some buyers may prefer to the Invisible Shield. Another is the Endo GRT case, which provides a nifty internal skeleton. As a word of advice if you buy the micro-USB charge, also buy the adapter that converts any outlet to a USB charging port. They’re inexpensive, and you might be surprised at just how often you use it

Hand Held Satellite Phones: Market About To Change

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Since it’s inception in 1960 with the launch of the first telecommunications satellite, the satellite telecommunications industry has gone through dramatic changes and seen incredible growth.

Hand held and portable satellite phone use has become very common in many business sectors today but it’s wide spread growth has been slowed by the penetration cellular phone systems have had.

With the cellular standard GSM (Global system for mobile communications) becoming the world standard cellular use has grown exponentially allowing users to access voice & data services with the same handset around the globe. But since cellular systems use towers and are land based coverage issues are a problem in many areas around the world.

Satellite systems overcome these limitations by not having a dependence on land based networks. Two primary satellite telecommunication systems exist, one being Geostationary (GEO) and the other being Low Earth Orbit (LEO). GEO systems orbit around the equator at altitudes of 35,000 km while LEO systems orbit in varying paths (primarily circular) at altitudes of 780 km. GEO systems have coverage over most of the globe minus the poles while LEO systems usually provide global coverage.

Four main competitors exist in the hand held & portable satellite market. Iridium LLC, Thuraya, Globalstar and Inmarsat.

The first hand held satellite phone provider was Iridium which launched 66 LEO satellites in 1998. Global coverage is provided through their network including both Poles. The Iridium 9555 handset is their latest model.

The first competitor in the LEO market was Globalstar who launched commercial service in 2000. Their constellation of 48 satellites was dealt a blow in 2007 when problems arose with their voice communications.

Thuraya service was launched in 2001 and has three satellites in geostationary orbit. The Thuraya system is a regional provider offering coverage over Europe. The Middle East and parts of Africa.

In 1972 the Maritime industry was able to access satellite services through Inmarsat. Using GEO satellites, they have expanded services to include the BGAN land mobile system in 2005.

Starting in June 2010 Inmarsat will launch hand held services with the IsatPhone Pro.

Inmarsat has listened to the market and incorporated features users have been asking for such as Bluetooth and built in GPS. They are also bringing the entry price down below $700.00 which should open the market up to a whole new segment of users.

At this price the mobile satellite industry should see a huge influx of users who in the past could not take advantage of the safety and security provided by a hand held satellite phone.
